New Wave, originally the Brockton Bay Brigade, is a family group of heroes operating in Brockton Bay.[1] It's one of the only teams to not draw a clear between civilian and cape identities.[2] Their members have powers revolving around light and energy.[3]

DescriptionEdit

New Wave is a team consisting of two related nuclear families, perhaps best known for their advocacy of superheroes without secrets and full accountability.[1] In the past, they received national attention when they unmasked publicly after their take-down of Marquis,[4] taking the name New Wave at the same time.[1] Their movement quickly stalled at its peak with the death of Fleur, who was murdered in her civilian identity by a cape trying to earn membership of Empire Eighty-Eight.[5] Lightstar left the team and resumed his concealed identity as a result, with New Wave remaining something of a cautionary tale.[2]

In modern day, their roster has expanded, with all four of their children having powers of their own.[6] All members are celebrities of a sort, wearing costumes without masks or helmets, each white with an emblem unique to each the member.[1]

Role in the storyEdit

Worm places most focus on the Dallon branch of New Wave, particularly Panacea and Glory Girl. As a team, New Wave makes it first appearance during the outing of members of Empire Eighty-Eight,[7][8] quickly followed by the battle against Leviathan,[9] Where they lose Manpower[10] and Shielder,[11] while Flashbang receives a severe head injury with long-term effects.[12] The team considered disbanding as a result.[13]

However, it's the attack by the Slaughterhouse Nine and the subsequent incarceration of Panacea[14] and Glory Girl[15] that cause New Wave to fall apart, with some member operating individually and others retiring from cape life entirely.[1] The remaining members are present at the oil rig during Scion's rampage.[16]

MembersEdit

Name Description
Pelham family
Lady Photon (Sarah Pelham)[17] Arguably the leader of New Wave, known to most as 'Photon Mom', with flight, a personal forcefield and 'hard light' blasts. Wears a white bodysuit with starburst motif in an indigo-purple gradient.[17]
Manpower (Neil Pelham)[10] Husband of Lady Photon. Has an electromagnetic augmentation allowing for superstrength and durability. Wears a white and yellow costume with a lightning bolt motif.[10] Killed by Leviathan.[18]
Laserdream (Crystal Pelham)[19] 19 year old[20] daughter of Lady Photon and Manpower, with powers similar to her mother. Wears a white bodysuit with a comet motif in a gradient of ruby red and magenta, with a red hairband and a coquettish sweep of blond hair over one side of her face.[21]
Shielder (Eric Pelham)[22] 15 year old[20] son of Lady Photon and Manpower with a more defensive variant of his mother's powerset. Wears a white costume with a blue shield motif, with blue dyed hair. Killed by Leviathan.[11]
Dallon family
Flashbang (Mark Dallon)[12] Husband to Brandish. Can create bouncing light orbs that detonated with concussive or explosive force. Wears a white costume with a green-yellow icon of an exploding grenade, complete with padding and a helmet.[12] Suffers from depression.[23]
Brandish (Carol Dallon)[24] Wife of Flashbang and also a high profile lawyer. Has the ability to create weapons and martial shields out of hard light, and can condense herself into a bouncing sphere of hard light, being effectively invincible and untouchable at the cost of all mobility. Wears a costume of white and orange with a crossed-blade symbol.[24]
Glory Girl (Victoria Dallon)[15] 17 year old[20] daughter of Flashbang and Brandish. Has flight, invincibility and enhanced strength, combined with aura that makes her allies more inclined to like, respect and look up to her, while making her terrifying and intimidating to her enemies. Was biologically altered by her sister in mind and body, and was placed in an asylum for parahumans.[15]
Panacea (Amy Dallon)[14] The adopted daughter of Flashbang and Brandish, the same age as Glory Girl.[20] Has touch-based biokinesis. Biological daughter of Marquis. Incarcerated in the Birdcage.[14] Has the birth name of Amelia Casteli,[25] although this is changed to Amelia Claire Lavere by the time she is living with Marquis.[26]
Formerly
Lightstar (Philip Sartin)[3] Youngest brother of Lady Photon and Brandish and Fleur's boyfriend. Left both New Wave and Brockton Bay after the death of Fleur.[27] Can create slow moving projectiles that he can detonate with concussive force at will.[28]
Fleur Lightstar's girlfriend. Was killed in her civilian identity by someone trying to earn both credit and membership of Empire Eighty-Eight at the peak of New Wave's popularity.[29]

TriviaEdit

  • The Pelham and Dallon families are, due to their known family trees, powers and their dedication to free information, often used as case studies for research into parahumans and the nature or distribution of powers.[30]

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 Originally the Brockton Bay Brigade, this group of heroes briefly became the subject of national attention when they unmasked publicly, rechristening themselves New Wave. Advocating superheroes without secrets and full accountability, they attempted to start a movement that stalled when a team member was murdered in her civilian identity. The team consisted of two related nuclear families, who have all become celebrities of a sort, wearing costumes without masks or helmets, each white with an emblem personal to the member.

Disbanded, though many members remain in Brockton Bay, some operating individually while others have retired from a life as a cape.
    - Cast (In Depth)
  2. 2.0 2.1 The movement appeared to be taking off, with other teams considering a similar approach, when Fleur was brutally murdered in her civilian identity. Lightstar left the team and resumed his concealed identity shortly after. New Wave remains something of a cautionary tale, and one of the only teams that does not draw a clear line between civilian and caped identities. - New Wave, edit by Wildbow.
  3. 3.0 3.1 The Brockton Bay Brigade was a standard, unofficial superteam founded by the three siblings Sarah Pelham (Lady Photon), Carol Dallon (Brandish) and Phillip Sartin (Lightstar). Each brought their current partners at the time into the team, husbands (Manpower and Flashbang), and Lightstar's girlfriend Fleur. In large part, the team consisted of people with powers centered around light and energy. - New Wave, edit by Wildbow.
  4. “You know Neil and I don’t have that much money. Neil isn’t having luck finding work, and all our funding from the team is going into the New Wave plan, which won’t happen for a few months, and we have two hungry mouths to feed…”

Brandish grasped her sister’s meaning. With a sick feeling in her gut, she spoke the idea aloud. “You want Mark and I to take her.” - Excerpt from Interlude 15 (Donation Bonus)
  5. Fleur was the rookie member of the Brockton Bay Brigade and was a member of the team as it was rechristened New Wave. Lightstar's girlfriend. While in her civilian identity, Fleur was killed by a cape looking to earn cred and (consequently) membership in Empire Eighty-Eight. This occurred at the peak of New Wave's rising popularity, at a point when the team and the idea of capes with public identities and full accountability was a topic of nationwide discussion, and was thus a death that received a great deal of media and public attention. - Fleur, edit by Wildbow.
  6. As a superteam that is also an extended family, New Wave has several junior members that gained powers of their own. These individuals are nineteen year old Laserdream and fifteen year old Shielder, the children of Manpower and Lady Photon, and seventeen year old Glory Girl, daughter of Brandish and Flashbang. Panacea, the same age as Glory Girl, was revealed to be the daughter of the same villain who was brought down by the Brockton Bay Brigade. She was adopted into the family out of concern that her background would draw too much negative attention or that the foster or adoption processes might be muddled by any number of people wanting to adopt a child who was more likely to have powers (by virtue of having a parent with powers). New Wave, edit by Wildbow.
  7. Lady Photon’s daughter and niece were in the air with her. Laserdream and Glory Girl. Mother and daughter shared the same general powers; flight, the ability to raise forcefield bubbles around themselves, and the ability to project lasers from their hands. As a consequence, their fight with Purity was something of a light show. - Excerpt from Buzz 7.9
  8. As she targeted Glory Girl, one of Purity’s blasts of light slammed into the edge of a rooftop. Debris showered down, but was deflected by a bright blue forcefield. That would be Shielder’s power at work. He fought alongside Flashbang and Brandish, and I could identify Krieg, Victor, Othala and Alabaster in their immediate vicinity. Further away were Night, Fog, Panacea, Vista and Clockblocker. - Excerpt from Buzz 7.9
  9. The kids from New Wave were near the Wards -Glory Girl, Panacea, Laserdream and Shielder- but they weren’t really joining in with the conversation the Wards were having. I could see Glory Girl and Gallant standing together; she was holding his hand. Panacea was sitting backwards on a chair just beside where Glory Girl stood, her arms folded over the chair back, chin resting on her wrists. She glared at the two of us, though the look was mainly directed at Tattletale. Near Panacea, the adults of New Wave had pulled the folding chairs into a rough circle so they could sit while they talked in a bit of a huddle. - Excerpt from Extermination 8.1
  10. 10.0 10.1 10.2 Manpower, Neil Pelham (Deceased) – Lady Photon’s husband. Had an electromagnetic augmentation allowing for superstrength and durability. Wore a white and yellow costume with a lightning bolt motif, but perished in the Endbringer arc. - Cast (In Depth)
  11. 11.0 11.1 Shielder (Deceased) – Youngest child of Lady Photon and Manpower. The inverse of his sister, was a very strong forcefield user, with little to no flight and weak laser blasts. Wore a white costume with a blue shield motif, with blue dyed hair. Slain by Leviathan. - Cast (In Depth)
  12. 12.0 12.1 12.2 Flashbang, Mark Dallon – Husband to Brandish, father to Glory Girl and Panacea. Could create bouncing light orbs that detonated with concussive or explosive force. Suffered long term head injuries in the Endbringer arc, but was cured by his daughter. Wears a white costume with a green-yellow icon of an exploding grenade, complete with padding and a helmet. - Cast (In Depth)
  13. “New Wave may be disbanding. My mom suggested that if I wanted to keep being a hero, I should consider joining the Wards. So I’m here, checking things out. Your leader and director okayed it.” - Excerpt from Sentinel 9.3
  14. 14.0 14.1 14.2 Panacea, Amy Dallon (Incarcerated; Birdcage) – An adopted member of the family, the daughter of Marquis. She is possessed of complete control over the biology of those she touches, a fact that has led to her incarceration in the Birdcage, where she’s reunited with her father and is coming to terms with what she did. Panacea has freckles and frizzy brown hair, and at least one tattoo, to commemorate her sister. - Cast (In Depth)
  15. 15.0 15.1 15.2 Glory Girl, Victoria Dallon (Incarcerated; Asylum) – Possessed of flight, invincibility, and capable of deadlifting over a ton. She radiates an energy that makes her allies more inclined to like, respect and look up to her, while making her terrifying and intimidating to her enemies. Following the conclusion of the Slaughterhouse Nine arc, Glory Girl was altered by her sister, in both mind and body, and was placed in an asylum for parahumans, where she currently remains. - Cast (In Depth)
  16. He approached the crowd, and he stopped in front of a woman I recognized but couldn’t place.

In the moment she slapped him, I drew the connection.

    Lady Photon. Sarah Pelham.

Flashbang and Brandish were with her, looking just as grim.

All around them, people were tensed for a fight.

That stopped when Marquis nodded solemnly. He murmured a few words, then walked away, standing on the same ledge that Acidbath had perched on, a little to the right of Lab Rat and String Theory. - Excerpt from Extinction 27.3
  17. 17.0 17.1 Lady Photon, Sarah Pelham – Arguably leader of New Wave, wife of Manpower, mother to Laserdream and Shielder, sister of Brandish. Known to most as ‘Photon Mom’, to her annoyance. Has the powers of flight, the ability to create a personal forcefield bubble, with various lesser applications, and ‘hard light’ blasts from her hands. Wore a white bodysuit with a starburst motif in an indigo-purple gradient, complete with a tiara. - Cast (In Depth)
  18. Manpower deceased, CD-6. Aegis deceased, CD-6, my armband spoke, at the same moment my bugs reached the area around where Leviathan had been.

He was awake again. - Excerpt from Extermination 8.4

  21. Laserdream – Eldest child of Lady Photon and Manpower. Has the same powers as her mother, with less facility with forcefields and stronger flight/laser blasts. Wore a white bodysuit with a comet motif in a gradient of ruby red and magenta, with a red hairband and a coquettish sweep of blond hair over one side of her face. - Cast (In Depth)

  24. 24.0 24.1 Brandish, Carol Dallon – Flashbang’s wife. Civilian identity is that of a high profile lawyer. 25. Basic Information
    Civilian Name Amy Dallon
    Aliases Amelia Casteli (birth name)
Gender Female - Panacea, edit by Wildbow.
  26. “What’s holding you back? You’re capable of so much, of changing the world, of destroying it, but you’re so very small, Amelia Claire Lavere.”

His voice was almost mocking as he said her name.

    “That’s not my name.”

“It’s the name you were born with. Imagine my surprise when I found out your relation to Marquis. In my last visit to Brockton Bay, I crossed paths with each of the major players. I met the man. I must tell you, Amelia, he was a very interesting character.” - Excerpt from Prey 14.10
  27. Lightstar is not a recurring character in Worm. He is the youngest brother to Sarah Pelham (Lady Photon) and Carol Dallon (Brandish), and was Fleur's boyfriend. He was a member of the Brockton Bay Brigade since its founding, and remained a member as the group was rechristened New Wave. He left both the team and Brockton Bay when Fleur was murdered. - Lightstar, edit by Wildbow.
  28. Author's note: Lightstar is unlikely to show up in the main story, and will only be featured if I write an arc centered around Glory Girl and Panacea, possibly as bonus content for the published books. As he's unlikely to show up in any meaningful context, I feel it's okay to spoil his power - he could create slow moving projectiles (around half the speed of a thrown basketball) that he could detonate concussively at will. - Lightstar, edit by Wildbow.
