Worm Wiki

Proposal: Citation Rules(updated!)

  • Will expand message later but right now i am thinking of concrete rules for citing material. Since we are doing a bit of a reorganization in the future I think it is best to get this stuff out of the way now. keep in mind these are for the advanced wiki editors that will be going over the wiki and tweaking material over the casual editors we rely on to tweak and perfect the wiki in their spare time. They generally do not have to worry about this material.

    • Quotations should mostly be posted as is from the source, without bolding or italicization so that that there will not be confusion when people follow links to check it for themselves.
    • Adding links within the quotations themselves is permissible if certain subjects are being obliquely referenced within the quoted text. The wiki is about clearing up mysteries rather then adding to them. Do not hyper link for every character mentioned however as this can get distracting.
    • The arbitrary preferred format for quotes from Worm, as it currently exists as an online web serial is:

<ref name="1.5">As a tool against Lung… I wasn’t sure if it would explode like regular dust could when exposed to flame, but fire didn’t hurt him anyways. Scratch that option. - [https://parahumans.wordpress.com/2011/06/25/gestation-1-5/ Excerpt] from [[Gestation 1.5]]</ref>

    • There are numerous smaller rules to be added but that can be for a later time, for example using ... whenever a quote gets too long, or even using <ref name="1.5e1"> and <ref name="1.5e2"> when quoting from diffrent parts of the same chapter. as well as <ref name="1.5c1"> when using a comment that appeared in that chapter. To say nothing of PRT Quest and quoting from various google docs or space battles archives.

These pedantic and frankly boring arguments are in the future and will only effect the Wiki admins curating the site, which we knew when going in. Thank you all for editing the Wikia!

    • I find myself agreeing with this, but that might be because I do it this way already.

"Adding links within the quotations themselves is permissible if certain subjects are being obliquely referenced within the quoted text. The wiki is about clearing up mysteries rather then adding to them."

I think this is a pretty good guideline :-)

"using <ref name="1.5e1"> and <ref name="1.5e2"> when quoting from diffrent parts of the same chapter."

      I will be adopting this.

Thank you for your good work.
